Further to free eye\u00a0<\/span>screening at Ananthi Eye Care (AEC), AssistRR have now\u00a0been providing free\u00a0<\/span>cataract\u00a0surgeries. As Karuna Trust promised,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>25 Mullaithivu<\/span>\u00a0patients were taken to Suwanetha Eye Hospital near Rajagiriya on\u00a01st June 2019 and\u00a0surgeries were successfully\u00a0conducted on the same day.\u00a0Karuna Trust also took 25 of Pathaviya patients (screened at AEC) on the same day to Suwanetha for surgeries.\u00a0Karuna Trust funded all\u00a0the surgeries and looked after the patients very well. Ramakrishna Mission kindly\u00a0provided\u00a0accommodation and food on 31st May. Photos of this camp can be seen by clicking this link\u00a0here:\u00a0<\/span>https:\/\/photos.app.goo.gl\/39byeDfzApp5LM6A7<\/a>\u00a0Further to our request to Association of Community\u00a0Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka, it arranged a surgery camp for 50 patients at Kadawatha Lions Eye Hospital on 09\u00a0June 2019. 49 patients were taken by bus\u00a0to Kadawatha and 44 patients were\u00a0successfully operated on the same day. Five patients had other medical\u00a0conditions and couldn’t be helped. They have now\u00a0been referred to Vavuniya and Jaffna hospitals. 5 of the 44 patients were\u00a0recommended by Oru Paanai. These surgeries were funded by Uduvil Ratnam Family\u00a0settled\u00a0in Canada. <\/span>Dr Prem Anand, Consultant\u00a0Ophthalmologist\u00a0Surgeon at\u00a0Kalmunai North Base Hospital, made a request to AssistRR to support some\u00a0surgeries at Kalmunai Hospital and told us that he can do around 40 surgeries on Sunday, 9th June 2019. AssistRR provided 40 lenses (IOLs)\u00a0and consumables to enable these surgeries. He told us most of the mature\u00a0cataract patients benefitted\u00a0have\u00a0already lost vision in one eye. These surgeries were also funded by Canadian\u00a0Uduvil Ratnam Family and\u00a0<\/span>some of my Peradeniya 1980\u00a0<\/span>Engineering\u00a0batch mates from Australia and\u00a0Canada,<\/span>. AssitRR would like to express its gratitude to\u00a0Uduvil Ratnam family (Canada),\u00a0Karuna Trust, some of my Peradeniya 1980\u00a0<\/span>Engineering\u00a0batch mates from Australia and Canada,\u00a0<\/span>and Ramakrishna Mission (Colombo)\u00a0<\/span>for their generous\u00a0support to these efforts. <\/span>A surgery is currently costing around \u00a345-\u00a350 due to various reasons, which are beyond our control. We should point out that this is the\u00a0cheapest cost of a surgery at present. If anyone\/any organisation interested in funding surgeries, please kindly contact us. There is still a huge backlog and we can certainly\u00a0help the poor,\u00a0elderly and vulnerable patients to\u00a0regain their eyesight. We are taking another 50 patients from Mannar to Suwanetha Eye Hospital near Rajagiriya on 13 July 2019 for cataract surgeries.<\/span><\/p>\n
