There was an accident at this school recently and one of the temporary shelters was completely damaged in a fire accident. The second temporary shelter was also slightly damaged. Mullai Trust informed us that if we could renovate the building that we already planned to do, there won’t be any need to build another temporary shelter. As this project had become a top priority due to the fire, Assist RR has now completed the renovation of this building and re-opened it for use on 23 Jan 2014.

The renovation project at Veenavil school was jointly funded by Solihull Junior School and Mr T Kanagarajah Thurairajah from Malaysia.  The renovation work started on 18 Nov and was completed by the new year.  This building was re-opened for use on 17th Jan 2014 by Mulliathvu GA, Mr Vethanayagan.  Assist RR would like to thank the contractor and our representatives in Sri Lanka for their hard work and sincere efforts in completing this project.  We would also like to thank the donors for helping the pupils of Veenavil school to learn in a safe and acceptable environment.

Assist RR made a documentary of the needs in Vanni and of the projects completed by them. The documentary shows the desperate living conditions of people in areas such as Mullivaikal and Mathalan, where the war ended in May 2009. It also contains details of projects completed by Assist RR in the past eight months and gives details of the projects that are being progressed. Assist RR made visits to some schools in Mullaithivu district on 6th Nov 2013 to inspect  “after school tuition” classes supported by Assist RR and Serendip Children’s Home.  This included visits to Oddusuddan MV, Puthukudiyiruppu Central college, Mulliyawalai Vidyananda College and Iyankulam GTM school.  Assist RR also visited some of the primary schools that are functioning in crowded and leaking temporary shelters in Mullaithivu district.  There are damaged buildings in these schools that can be repaired and renovated.  This would provide the schools with safer and acceptable environment conducive to learning.

Assist RR recently collected used clothes in the UK and sent to Vanni.  These clothes were distributed to the villagers in Mullivaikal, and the event took place at Chandran Pre-School, which was renovated by Assist RR.  Nearly 120 families benefited by these clothes. Assist RR would also like to donate solar powered lamps to help children to learn and families to save money on kerosene and to start livelihood projects including a garment factory in Mallavi and a rice/flour mill in Mullivaikal to provide employment to women.

Worcester International Badminton Club conducted its annual charity fundraising event on Saturday 2nd November 2013 in Worcester. This is an annual event, which aims to support different national and international charity organisations across the globe.  Sixteen teams from across Bristol, Birmingham, Solihull and Worcester took part for the Mens Doubles Charity Tournament. The event this year was supporting our charity Assist RR to help people in Vanni.  Worcester Club raised £190 through their event and Assist RR raised another £121.20 by selling refreshments at the event.

Puthukudiyiruppu (PTK) Divisional Hospital was the last functioning hospital in Vanni before the end of the war.  This hospital was badly damaged by shelling and was forced to move to a make shift hospital.  The hospital made a request to Assist RR for help with the renovation of the mortuary, since they were unable to use the existing mortuary, which was damaged during the war. Assist RR agreed to support and the renovated mortuary was handed over to the hospital on 5th Nov 2013. Assist RR has also joined forces with Serendip Children’s Home to raise funds to build at least one ward in the hospital.  Both charities have raised nearly £20,000 so far and laid foundation to a ward on 05th Nov 2013.  The construction has commenced and is expected to be completed by Mid Jan 2014.
