Needs of Schools in Sampoor & Donation of Bicycles and Furniture by Assist RR in Trincomalee

People, who were displaced by the war in Sampoor, Trincomalee in 2006, have not been resettled in their villages yet and are still living in refugee camps in Sampoor, where two primary schools are functioning in one premises and two displaced pre-schools are functioning as one in the Hostel of Seniyur Central College.  These schools are functioning without basic facilities, such as decent desks, chairs, teaching aids, laboratory and library facilities. All the students of these schools are coming from the refugee camps around Seniyur. Another school in Koonithivu, Sampoor is lacking space and conducting classes where ever they find spaces. These schools desperately need assistance such as a building and furniture. Assist RR recently donated furniture to the pre-school and five bicycles to needy GCE O/L & A/L students from remote villages of Trincomalee district using funds donated by an anonymous donor from Hong Kong and Rotary Club of Edgbaston, UK.

Puthukudiyiruppu (PTK) Hospital Ward Project – Update

Assist RR was approached by Mullaithivu GA, Mr Vethanayagan, with a request to fund construction of male & female wards at PTK hospital. The GA has been trying to get funding through other sources but, as he failed to do so, he approached Assist RR for assistance to build at least one ward. Assist RR agreed and has been raising funds. Although it was estimated that the cost would be around £31k for the 24-bed ground floor ward, we are now confident that it would be completed at a cost of around £26k. Serendip Children’s Home has agreed to donate £12k towards the ground floor and Assist RR is funding £16k. The foundation was laid on 05 Nov 2013 and the project has been progressing well.

Bicycles donated by Harrow Aathiparasakthi Mandram to Children in Batticaloa

There is another good news that we would like to share with you.  Following our visit to two remote villages in Wellaveli, Batticaloa in January 2014, we made an appeal to assist these villagers in a number of ways.  Further to this appeal, Dr Namasivayam of Sivanarulillam approached Annai Aathiparasakthi Valipaddu Mandram in Harrow, UK and appealed them to consider donating 15 bicycles to the children from the two remote villages called 16th Colony and Maalayarkaddu.  They responded positively and arranged the donations through Kathankudi Aathiparasakthi Valipaddu Mandram on 03 March 2014.  We would like to thank Annai Aathiparasakthi Valipaddu Mandram in Harrow, UK for agreeing to donate at a short notice and for donating these bicycles to the children, who were walking up to 13 kMs one way to attend their schools. We also would like to thank Dr Namasivayam for approaching the donors and making this happen.  This would certainly assist these children’s learning to some extent. But we can do more by providing evening classes in their villages. Please remember there are no A/L students and only 3 O/L students in these villages.

Renovation of Puthukkudiyiruppu RC Vidyalayam

This school is located in the vicinity of Puthukudiyiruppu hospital and was badly damaged during the war. This school started functioning in September 2012 after the end of war in May 2009. Currently, there are 445, both Hindu and Christian, students, from Year 1 to GCE O/L, learning here with the services of 24 teachers. At present, the school infrastructure include a temporary shelter built by UNICEF, a permanent building recently built by Child Fund, and the badly damaged building, in which six classes are being conducted. Following Assist RR’s appeal for funds to renovate this school building, a generous and kind-hearted Malaysian family with roots in Urumpirai have pledged funds around Rs 2.2 Million to renovate this school building. Assist RR would like to thank the family for their kind support.

Living conditions of Disabled persons and their needs in E&N

There are hundreds of families in the East and North of Sri Lanka where at least one member is suffering from physical disability due to the war.  In Mullaithivu district alone, there are 3351 disabled persons, of whom  1786 persons are disabled due to the war.  Most of the disabled people have had artificial limbs fitted but are still facing extreme hardship due to lack of suitable job opportunities to re-start their livelihood. Assist RR met representatives of disabled families on 16 Jan 2014 in Mullaithivu, which enabled Assist RR to realise the extent of the problems, the disabled families have been facing since the end of the war.
